  • The Queen of the Summer Sun

    July 2nd, 2015

    maxresdefault

When inspiration strikes it can strike hard. Hot on the heels of their new 16 series the rebel|robot|mcs (this re-branding is getting harder and harder to type (but what can you do with those artist-types?)) have just released an ambient tribute to Astrud Gilberto or, as they like to call her, the Queen of the Summer Sun. This morning I was lucky enough to speak to DJ SLO-MO (Dalton Akimbo to her friends and family) and she gave me the low-down.

ME: What with the re-branding and the change in sonic direction it looks like the rebel|robot|mcs are back with a bang. This is great news for everyone, especially me, because the last time we saw you all you had just signed one of the most eye-wateringly repressive contracts in the history of eye-wateringly repressive contracts. Are you allowed to say anything about this?

DJ SLO-MO: Hi everyone. Yes this is great news, especially for us, of course, but we are not allowed to say anything about the contract other than to say that it no longer exists. This is the result of the contract we signed to end the contract we signed if you see what I mean.

ME: OK, fair enough. So can I ask you about your change in direction? What inspired you? What do you see happening going forward?

DJ SLO-MO: We’re not really sure at the moment. After the trauma of the contract we are just happy to be starting again. We are all having fun and just seeing what happens. Nothing more really.

ME: The Queen of the Summer Sun?

DJ SLO-MO: My dad has always played this stuff and so I have always heard it growing up. When you move away from what you have been doing you very often look into your past for inspiration and that is what I did. It is very basic and not yet very good but that is fine. We are happy with the knowledge that we can only get better.

ME: Thank you very much DJ SLO-MO and good luck for the future.

DJ SLO-MO: Thank you as well and I hope to speak to you soon.

You can watch the video below.

You can also find this new track as well as the 16 series on SoundCloud

  • two16 (rebel|robot|mcs 2015)

    June 26th, 2015

Following on from yesterday’s post I thought you would all like to see another film in the new series created by the rebel|robot|mcs (note the new spelling). This is the video to accompany their second track in the SIXTEEN series two16 inspired, once again, by the sounds made by analogue film paraphernalia. This particular film really gets to the heart of the project and I think promises much more to come.

  • one16

    June 24th, 2015

For those of you worried that those rhythm-crafty beatsketeers DJ Slo-Mo, Nuclear Boy and R-Man (better known as Rebel Robot MCs) had fallen by the way the wayside I am thrilled to share this tweet I came across this afternoon. Inspired by ‘the noises made by analogue film paraphernalia’ the track one16 and the video that accompanies it makes me think that the Rebel Robot MCs are maturing as a collective. Who knows where this new direction will lead them?

  • #7DaysToDie Ep. 9 – ‘the longness of my loneliness’

    June 10th, 2015

    IMG_1382

As I stare into the longness of my loneliness I am comforted by a book I recently found in an abandoned house not far from where I live now.Though the circumstances of his solitude are not the circumstances of my solitude there is something to be found in the following words from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden:

I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. (1854)

  • ‘Not you too, Paul Hewson’, I said to myself.

    May 14th, 2015

    20185195829b8f8bb20263f5f3f0c158

Not you too, Paul Hewson, I said to myself. But it was. The images were grainy. The glasses gave him away. It was snowing in the footage. The garage forecourt was empty. Where was Catherine Deneuve?

Bono was talking on what looked like a Mobira Cityman 900. 183 x 43 x 79 mm. Those things have a total weight of 760g. They are nicknamed ‘Gorba’ in Finland because Mikhail Gorbachev used one during a press conference in 1987.

Who would be on the other end of a phone like that? And what would they be saying? I could only imagine.

The enormity of my task fell upon me like wealth fell hard on Charles Foster Kane.

  • #7DaystoDie Ep. 8 – ‘Dream House in the Country’

    May 7th, 2015

    IMG_1382

Good news. I have finally found the house I have been looking for.

Empty. Turn-key condition. No chain. Fully furnished. It even has a verandah overlooking a lake. Best of all the house is very close to the city – one bridge and a brisk jog.

I have had to do some landscaping in the garden. I also put up a new wall for privacy. I haven’t met my neighbors yet but I’m sure I will. I hear some of them at night. Walking around. In the morning they are not there.

  • #7DaystoDie Ep. 6 ‘dose it sound like the hornets are saying asshole to any one?’

‘The implied presence of the rest of the world, and its explicit rejection, are as essential in the experience of a photograph as what it explicitly presents. A camera is an opening in a box: that is the best emblem of the fact that a camera holding on an object is holding the rest of the world away.’
