    The Eleventh Film VII

Ministers rushed to anoint these visitors with a sacred hue. Channelling their embrace for global purposes. The world’s biggest stadia were filled with their expectant flock, desperate for an embrocation.

The angels moved among like the wary wolves they were.

    Dismantling.

    Rupturing.

    Destroying.

It’s too easy to say that this should not have happened. Perhaps the world needed to listen less to demagogues and more to the Earth itself.

In any case, all points were moot now.

    It just got cold.

    And that was that.

    Ever more.

    The Eleventh Film VII

Some thought it had to be negligence.

Others proffered chance as an explanation.

    A by-product of progress.

An unforeseen response to technological change.

    It was all of naught.

    There was no suitable analysis.

The cosmic die had been cast.

    They were among us now.

    Summoned by the Eleventh Film.

It was now simply as if they had always been here.

    The Eleventh Film Part VI

At the start the world thought that their presence was something of vital import. Something founded on their notions of variation.
In the shifts in quality evident in the images.
The tones and lacks and blurs and blemishes.
    The filters and the fragments.
    The spaces between as well.
    The joins.
    The fissures.
    The friction.
But they danced before us here and not here.
    There and not quite there.
We were never able to properly overcome their liminality.

    The Eleventh Film Part VI

It was Georges Méliès who first saw the angels. With his love of trick and smoke and conjuring. Méliès felt their presence. He understood their mission.
He began to chart their flight as they flew like sainted bees. Gathering evidence for a sceptical world. He tried to speak with them. But how do you talk to bees? What do you even say?
And then everything he had managed to gather was lost in a studio fire.
And so it was their presence simply became the natural way of things.

    The Eleventh Film Part V

The world’s first public film screening was held in Paris on December 28th 1895.
Eleven short films were on the bill that night.
Only ten films are listed for posterity.
The eleventh film had no name.
    It was the night sky.
    There was a meteor shower.
The film ran for five eighths of a second.
    The audience didn’t notice.
    There are no explanations.
    No knowing how it happened.
    What went wrong.
    How it was made?
It is simply the case that this was the moment when the terrible truth got told to the world.
    And what was this truth?
    That everything will end.

The Eleventh Film – Part IV

    A city at night.

    A man’s face.

Then she conjured a loop of words.

    Amaranthine.

    Continual.

    Illimitable.

    Perdurable.

    Unlimited.

The Eleventh Film – Part III

There once was a looped fragment.

    The image of a word.

    Now there is only nothing.

And any thoughts that still remain are those she had about the end of all things.

  • The Eleventh Film – Flash Fiction Serial Parts I & II

The Eleventh Film – A Flash Fiction Serial

    Part I

Auguste and Louis Lumière put on the world’s first public film screening. It took place on December 28th 1895 at the Salon Indien du Grand Café in Paris. Eleven short films were on the bill that night. Only ten films are listed for posterity. The eleventh film was called The View of Pazuzu returning to the World. It was a desert scene, with a half-buried broken statue and a sandstorm. It ran for five-eighths of a second. It was not noticed by the audience.

    Part II

It was actually Georges Méliès who first saw the angels and charted their progress as they moved like sainted bees. And ever since then we have tried to speak to them. But how can you talk to bees? What can you say? How would you even begin? And so we never did and that became the natural way of things and though we were granted a limited purview we were never truly ever given access.
