Mac paused.

‘Of course I should have said could prevent this from happening as she is no longer able to do so.’ Mac began to sob again.

‘The world’s most vital resource and I threw it away like the wrappers of the cheap food we have all been eating.’

Gilly hated to see the pain in his friend’s eyes.

‘You weren’t to know,’ he said. ‘How could you have?’ Mac got angry.

‘Weren’t to know?’ he said. ‘Weren’t to know? I only had one thing to do and that was to make sure that I did know.’

Mac was broken now.

‘I couldn’t even do that!’
